Assessment of Intellectual Growth:  Findings

Both readers assigned the same score independently to twelve of the sixteen pairs of papers.  Of these twelve, ten demonstrated intellectual growth (score = +/+), one demonstrated no growth (score = 0/0), and one demonstrated negative growth (score = -/-).  The raters disagreed over four pairs of papers, each of which received scores of one + and one 0.  A third reader (the project administrator) rated these pairs to break the tie and categorize them, which resulted in one of the four pairs receiving a +, another receiving a 0, and the remaining two on the cusp of a + and a 0.

The results can be summarized as follows:

Total students in the class: 16

Students demonstrating positive intellectual growth (2 out of 2 or 2 out of 3 “+” designations): 11

Students demonstrating possible intellectual growth (1 “+” score, 1 “0” score, 1 undecided): 2

Students demonstrating no intellectual growth (2 out of 2 “0” scores): 2

Students demonstrating negative intellectual growth (2 out of 2 “-“ scores): 1
