Time Spent Outside Class

When I first started teaching, I spent a lot of time in laboratories outside of class, giving help sessions and individual/small group help as requested. As I get older and busier, I have less and less available time, and offer it less. I have a different perspective on my free time now that I don’t have any of it! However, when we have an examination in a course, I make a point to advertise one night (usually Wednesday before the Friday examination) when I will be in the lab to answer questions. If students ask me for help outside of class, I make every effort to meet with them; however, I usually ask them now if they can get a small group together to maximize my time spent. Sometimes it is simply not possible to meet with them when they would like, due to my other college and family responsibilities. I do feel like I have voluntarily spent an appropriate amount of my time outside of class and that I have been adequately available when requested.
